Mary Lou Retton (born January 24, 1968) is a former Olympic gymnast. She attended Fairmont High School, in Fairmont, WV, as a freshman, where she had a chance to be part of that year’s homecoming court before moving to Houston to train for the 1984 Summer Olympics. In a feature article about Retton, her 1983 yearbook speculated that she might soon become a household name in the world of gymnastics. In fact, while only a high school sophomore, Retton did earn a spot on the U.S. women’s Olympic team. She ended up winning five medals and became the first American woman to bring home gold in the individual all-around competition. Retton became a very popular figure and soon ended up as the first female athlete on a Wheaties box. She retired from gymnastics in 1986 and was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997.
