Garry Kent Marshall (born November 13, 1934 – July 19, 2016) was an American director, producer, writer, and actor. He graduated with the class of 1952 from DeWitt Clinton High Schoolin the Bronx, New York. In high school, he was part of the Clinton Newspaper Club, Squad X Club, and the sports editor for the school yearbook. Marshall began his career as a writer, writing jokes for comedians such as Joey Bishop and Phil Foster. In 1961, Marshall teamed up with Jerry Belson and began working on The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Joey Bishop Show, The Danny Thomas Show, and eventually The Lucy Show. In the next decade, he created the popular TV shows Happy DaysLaverne and Shirley (co-starring younger sister Penny), and Mork & Mindy. Apart from his writing career, Marshall also went on to direct the successful feature films Beaches, Pretty Woman, The Princess Diaries, Valentine’s Day, and New Year’s Eve.
