Arthur “Art” Ira Garfunkel (born November 5, 1941) is a singer, poet, and actor. He is a 1958 graduate of Forest Hills High School, in Forest Hills, NY. Garfunkel met future partner Paul Simon in 1953, when both were cast in the same school play. A few years later, the boys started performing together as “Tom & Jerry,” occasionally providing music at school dances. The two went their separate ways for college, but after graduation they reunited and started performing as Simon & Garfunkel. Their first album didn’t meet expectations, and the two separated again. However, “Sounds of Silence,” one of the album’s songs, was re-released the following year and reached number one on Billboard’s pop charts. When the pair reunited again, Simon & Garfunkel ended up becoming one of the most popular recording acts of the 1960s, with Garfunkel as the vocal arranger. The duo split in for good in 1970, but they have occasionally reunited to perform. Garfunkel has gone on to release ten solo albums. His career has also extended to acting, including Catch-22 (1970); Carnal Knowledge (1971), for which he received a Golden Globe nomination; Boxing Helena (1993); and a recurring role in American Dreams. He also spent a short time teaching high school geometry at a private school in Connecticut, having somehow found time to study for his doctorate in mathematics education during the peak of Simon & Garfunkel’s popularity.
