Dennis Franz (born Dennis Franz Schlachta on October 28, 1944) is an actor. He graduated from Proviso East High School, in Maywood, IL, in 1962. While at Proviso, Franz participated in drama, choir, football, and baseball, among other activities. His first credited big-screen appearance was in 1978, and he became more or less typecast as a police officer early on. He is most well-known for his portrayal of Detective Andy Sipowicz on NYPD Blue (1993-2005) and also appeared as two different characters in the series Hill Street Blues. His list of acting credits is a fairly long one, but he has been primarily focused on his private life since 2005. Franz was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999.
