Garry Emmanuel Shandling (November 29, 1949 – March 24, 2016) was a comedian, actor, and writer. He was a 1967 graduate of Palo Verde High School, located in Tucson, AZ.

Shandling broke into the entertainment business as a sitcom writer in the 1970s. Several years later, he got interested in standup comedy. His first performance was in 1978, at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles. After a strong standup performance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1981, he began making frequent guest-host appearances on the show.

Shandling co-created and starred in two popular sitcoms. The first, It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, began airing in 1986 and ended after a successful four-season run. The Larry Sanders Showdebuted in 1992. Based around his earlier guest-host experiences, this series ran until 1998.

Among other film credits, Shandling had a recurring role in Iron Man 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier as well as appearances in Dr. Dolittle (1998), Town & Country (2001), Zoolander(2001), and The Dictator (2012). Television appearances included episodes of The Ben Stiller Show (1992) and The X-Files (2000). He also hosted the Grammy Awards four times and the Emmy Awards three times. Shandling’s last performance was a voice role in 2016’s The Jungle Book, released after his untimely death.
