Gregory Efthimios “Greg” Louganis (born January 29, 1960) is a former Olympic diver. He graduated from Valhalla High School, in El Cajon, CA, in 1978, where he competed for the boys’ diving team and coached the girls’ team. While still in high school, Louganis competed in the 1976 Montreal Olympics and came home with a silver medal. Following the U.S. boycott of the 1980 games in Moscow, he became the only male in Olympic history to win gold medals for both the springboard and platform diving events in consecutive Olympic games (in 1984 and 1988). Louganis published his autobiography, Breaking the Surface (with Eric Marcus as co-author) in 1996. The following year, the USA Network aired Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story, with Mario Lopez in the starring role. Louganis has been coaching since 2010 and was a mentor to the U.S. diving team at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
