James Byron Dean (February 8, 1931 – September 30, 1955) was an American actor. He graduated with the class of 1949 from Fairmount High School in Fairmount, Indiana. In high school, he was on the track team and played basketball. He was considered a brilliant senior guard and overall one of the top guards in the country. He was active in theatre, band and F Club. Dean was also on the debate team and won the N.F.L. state dramatic declamation. He is a cultural icon known for his roles in Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden, and Giant. Dean’s deadly 1955 car crash skyrocketed the actor into legendary status. He was the first actor to receive an Academy Award nomination posthumously.
