James Alan Hetfield (born August 3, 1963) is a musician, singer, and songwriter. After attending Downey High School (in Downey, CA) as a freshman and sophomore, he graduated from Brea Olinda High School (in Brea, CA) in 1981. Shortly after graduation, Hetfield co-founded heavy metal band Metallica with Lars Ulrich, after answering a classified ad placed by Ulrich. The band’s first album was released in 1983, with Hetfield on lead vocals and rhythm guitar. He remains at the helm and is also the band’s main songwriter. Metallica, considered one of the most commercially successful bands of all time, has received nine Grammy awards over the years, and Hetfield has appeared on several best guitarist lists.
