Jane Fonda (born Jayne Seymour Fonda on December 21, 1937) is an actress, activist, and fitness guru. She is a 1955 graduate of Emma Willard School, in Troy, NY, where she participated in drama and was a member of the Decorating Committee and the Dress Committee. Fonda became interested in acting while still in high school and landed her first movie role (in Tall Story) in 1960. Her breakout role came about several years later when she co-starred in Cat Ballou (1965). Another career milestone was her performance in On Golden Pond (1981), in which she finally had the opportunity to act with her famous father, Henry Fonda. Other notable films include Barefoot in the Park (1967), Klute (1971), Fun With Dick and Jane (1977), Coming Home(1978), 9 to 5 (1980), and Monster-in-Law (2005). Fonda also found success outside of acting when she became interested in aerobics and released her first video in 1982. Jane Fonda’s Workout became one of the best-selling videos of the next few years, and over 20 other workout tapes followed. For decades, Fonda has also been known as a political activist. In the 1960s, she spoke out in support of civil rights and in opposition to the Vietnam War, with the latter leading to controversy and plenty of anti-Fonda sentiment. More recently, she has been a strong advocate of women’s rights. Fonda can currently be seen co-starring in the Netflix series Grace and Frankie.
