Kathleen Doyle “Kathy” Bates (born June 28, 1948) is an actress and director. She graduated from White Station High School, in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1966, where she participated in both the pep club and the student council. Bates first shot to fame after starring as a deranged fan in Misery, a role for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Her list of acting credits is a long one and includes prominent roles in both film and television, including The Blind Side, Dolores Claiborne, Six Feet Under, and several seasons of American Horror Story. Beginning in the 1990s, she also began directing. Directorial projects include Have Mercy and episodes of Homicide: Life on the Street, Oz, and Everwood.
