How could anyone forget cheering on Costner in his legendary role as determined farmer Ray Kinsella in ‘Field of Dreams’, or being mesmerized by his performance in ‘Dances with Wolves’ as a rugged, free-spirited Civil War soldier? 

In both movies and television, Costner has been dominating the big screen since the ‘80s. Those who have followed him since they were young surely wish they could go back to those glory days when they got to watch him act for the very first time.

Kevin Costner is an Academy award-winning actor who began a career in Hollywood in the early ‘80s, gaining significant recognition in the mid to late ‘80s. Costner made his film debut in the independent comedy film Sizzle Beach, U.S.A in 1981.

Early Work

Costner continued to play sporadic minor roles in the early ‘80s until he finally achieved his big break in the western film Silverado in 1985. The role was promised to him by director Lawrence Kasdan, after Costner’s scenes were cut from his 1983 film The Big Chill.

A-List Actor

Costner established himself as an A-list movie star in the late 1980s, beginning with his role as Prohibition agent Eliot Ness in Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables(1987). 

Costner branched off into the sports realm with his roles in baseball-themed films Bull Durham(1988) and Field of Dreams(1989), maintaining his status as a Hollywood A-lister.

Later Career

‘90s and 2000s Films

Costner continued to see fairly consistent success throughout the ‘90s, landing roles in well-known films such as JFK(1991) and The Bodyguard(1992) alongside Whitney Houston. Costner’s career began to see fluctuations starting in the late ‘90s, as he appeared in several box office failures, including The Postman(1997), which Costner also directed. 

Costner saw somewhat of a revival in the 2000s, particularly after directing and starring in the western Open Range(2003). Costner continued to star in critically acclaimed films throughout the 2000s, including romantic comedy The Upside of Anger(2005) and sports drama McFarland, USA(2015).

Television Work

In the mid to late 2000s, Costner began to see success in television, starring in a three-part miniseries called Hatfields and McCoys in 2012, and in the award-winning neo-Western drama series Yellowstone from 2018 to 2024. Costner won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama for his role as rancher Jack Dutton in Yellowstone.

College Education

Costner attended college at California State University, Fullerton(CSUF), and graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1978 with plans to work in marketing. Costner became a brother of the Delta Chi fraternity while at CSUF, and became interested in acting during his senior year.

Kevin Costner was raised by his mother Sharon, and father William, and moved frequently throughout California due to his father’s career. Sharon was a welfare worker, and William worked as an electrician and utilities executive. Costner also has a brother named Daniel, and had a brother named Mark who died during childbirth.

Loving Father

Costner is the father of seven wonderful children, four sons and three daughters. His daughters Annie, Lily, and Grace Avery are 41, 39 and 15, respectively, while his sons Joe, Liam, Caden Wyatt, and Hayes Logan are 37, 28, 18, and 16.

Costner has publicly discussed his love and appreciation for his children. “You’ve got to get down on the ground and play with them,” he said. “And you teach them to be independent — and the sad part about that is they become that. I’m like any other parent: I’m trying to figure it out.”

Costner married his college sweetheart, Cindy Silva, in 1978, after previously dating for three years. The couple divorced in 1994, after 16 years of marriage, following Costner’s alleged affair on the set of Waterworld(1995).

Subsequent Relationships and Second Marriage

After his divorce, Costner had two brief relationships with Bridget Rooney and political activist Birgit Cunningham before marrying model and handbag designer Christine Baumgartner on September 25, 2004 at his ranch in Aspen, Colorado. The couple divorced in 2024.
