Laura “Laurie” Elizabeth Metcalf (born June 16, 1955) is an actress. She is a 1973 graduate of Edwardsville High School, in Edwardsville, IL. While in high school, Metcalf was active in drama and singing.

Shortly after graduating from college, Metcalf became a charter member of the newly-established Steppenwolf Theater Company. She has remained an active part of the theater community throughout her acting career, both with Steppenwolf and elsewhere.

In 1978, Metcalf made her first big-screen appearance – an uncredited role as a maid in The Wedding. A few years later, she appeared in a “Weekend Update” segment in an episode of Saturday Night Live. She has gone on to land many roles in both film and television.

Metcalf is perhaps best known for portraying Jackie Harris in the comedy series Roseanne(1988-1997, 2018). Other series credits include 3rd Rock from the SunThe Norm ShowFrasierGrey’s AnatomyPortlandia, and Getting On. Films have included Desperately Seeking Susan(1985), Uncle Buck (1989), JFK (1991), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), and Scream 2 (1997).

More recently, Metcalf has had a recurring role in The Big Bang Theory as well as a critically-acclaimed co-starring role in the 2017 film Lady Bird.
