Mary Tyler Moore (December 29, 1936 – January 25, 2017) was an actress. She graduated from Immaculate Heart High School, in Los Angeles, CA, in 1955. Moore’s first professional performing work was a series of commercials for Hotpoint, in which she portrayed a tiny dancing elf. She landed her first regular television role on Richard Diamond, Private Detective in 1959 and followed that with a series of guest appearances on other programs. Her first big career break came about when she was cast as Laura Petrie in The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961-1966). She is possibly best known for her starring role in the popular sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show(1970-1977), one of the first television shows to portray the life of an independent working woman in a genuine way. Moore has a long list of acting credits, with standouts including the films Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) and Ordinary People (1980). She was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1986 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1992.
