Philip Seymour Hoffman (July 23, 1967 – February 2, 2014) was an actor, director, and producer. He was a 1985 graduate of Fairport High School, in Fairport, NY, where he was a member of the drama club. Hoffman became interested in acting as a teenager and made his first on-screen appearance in 1991, in an episode of Law & Order. The following year, he started to gain national attention with his role in Scent of a Woman. His abundant talent soon became apparent, and his list of acting credits grew. Over the course of Hoffman’s relatively short career, he won many accolades. While also an accomplished stage actor, he was primarily known for his big-screen work, which included starring roles in Capote (2005) and Doubt (2008). Other notable films include Twister (1996), Boogie Nights (1997), Magnolia (1999), Punch-Drunk Love (2002), Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), and The Master (2012). Hoffman also portrayed Plutarch Heavensbee in the Hunger Games series. His last on-screen appearance was in 2015’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. After his death, Hoffman was described in the New York Times as “perhaps the most ambitious and widely admired American actor of his generation.”
