Anthony “Tony” Marcus Shalhoub (born October 9, 1953) is an actor. He is a 1972 graduate of East High School (in Green Bay, WI), where he was a Student Council officer as well as a member of the Curling Club. Shalhoub became interested in acting while in high school (despite breaking his leg at a rehearsal during his senior year!).

Shalhoub was first drawn to theater acting and debuted on Broadway in 1985, after spending four seasons with the American Repertory Theater. His first on-screen acting credits came a year later: a guest spot in an episode of The Equalizer and a bit part in Heartburn. He first became known to a wider audience when he landed a role in the sitcom Wings (1991 – 1997).

Today, Shalhoub is probably best known for starring in Monk, the quirky detective series that ran from 2002 to 2009. But he has a long list of acting credits that cover television, movies, and stage. Notable film roles include Barton Fink (1991), Big Night (1996), The Siege (1998), Galaxy Quest (1999), and 1408 (2007). He currently co-stars in the series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which debuted in 2017.

Awards (partial list):

  • Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy for Monk. 2002, 2003
  • Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series for Monk. 2002 – 2004
  • Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Monk. 2003, 2005, 2006
  • Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for The Band’s Visit. 2018
